We now have 2 websites! We are branching out! Go and check them out right now!
For my first blog post I wanted to start from the start as it were.
So here we go.....Once upon a time there was a young boy called Simon.........
When I was a young boy I had a instant attraction to all things visual media. I loved Fantasy & Sci-Fi Art, Architectural Designs, Technical Drawings, Airbrushed Custom Car Graphics, Insignia on Fighter & Bomber Aircraft, etc. I also loved building and painting model figurines and war gaming miniatures. For me it was about a feeling I got when I saw something that really grabbed me, got me excited, fired me up and inspired my imagination.
For me it was this kind of magic, that people had, to create this beautiful visually stimulating art and design. It enabled me to dream for hours on end about ideas and about fantasy worlds that didn't actually really exist apart from what was on paper. I have always felt that feeling of being truly excited when I saw an art work or design piece that just hit all the right buttons for me.
I didn't think I would be able to ever be as good as the comic book artists or concept drawing designers but I continued to find more material to view and to learn about. I never thought I would end up realizing that seed that had been placed inside me as a young boy.
Photoshop was some kind of magical graphic design tool
As I grew up I kept at trying to be creative or at least have my creative visual side stimulated by admiring others work.
I thought that Photoshop was some kind of magic tool and Illustrator a kind of magic device that I wouldn't be able to master. That was when I decided I wanted to learn about Graphic Design and take the step from dreaming to actually partaking of that world so I enrolled in a Introductory Certificate in Visual Arts
Boy was that a shock to my system. I had to unlearn what I thought Visual Art actually was and then learn about what it actually wasn't. I must say I didn't really find the Certificate that fun but it did really open my eyes to what was a real possibility for my future. I aced the Certificate with Straight A's. So my next natural decision was to enroll into the Bachelor of Visual Arts. This was also another shock and it was now getting real. I had to try and learn multiple computer programs all at once while trying to do assignments and projects, not just on time, but do them well.
With a Graphic Design Degree in the bag I had a brand new perspective on life
3 years later, and with a brand new perspective on life, I thought I would leave the Bachelors with a Degree and could just walk into a Graphic Design job. I was in for another shock and it really hurt....it was called reality. I realized I had done really well in my degree but that meant nothing in the real world. I had to gain experience but to gain experience I had to get a job but to get the job I had to have experience....you get my drift. It was a catch-22 and it was a very hard point in my life.
I didn't give up but I did get work in industries that had nothing to do with what I had studied for. Manual labour jobs,
hard outside work in all kinds of weather, on land and on sea. I worked as a process engineer making fencing systems for farms, a work hand on a oyster farm, a meat packer in a butchery, a supermarket shelf stacker among other things. All throughout that time though I never let my dream die. I thought about it, I dreamed about it, I continued to dwell on it. I would get that job as a Graphic Designer or die trying.
When I was working in those various jobs I still played around with design on the computer, surfed the net finding inspiration, tutorials, visual stimuli to keep my dream moving forward for when I did get the opportunity to finally get accepted into a design job. I did some freelance work here and there, did short stints of design work, but never a steady full time gig. Yes I got down and yes I was disappointed but I never gave up or let that flame die inside me.
Years later I finally got a graphic design job
I finally got a full time job as a graphic designer, after applying for many and after many nerve racking interviews, which turned into a multidisciplinary position. I was now doing graphic design, web design, digital marketing with adwords, bingads, facebook, twitter, youtube, instagram. I also learnt about and experienced the true value and power of search engine optimisation and it's very real results in and on business. Since then I have been in a few of the same kind jobs and I have learnt so much. It has been amazing. I am now a experienced Graphic Designer, Web Designer, Digital Marketer, Presentologist, SEO Professional and also a Content Writer!
Never ever give up!
The main idea of this post is to tell you that no matter what, never ever let your dream die. Ask God and tell him about what you would like to do, after all God probably put that desire in you to begin with. Keep steering your life towards those goals and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. Strive and claw your way forward, seek, ask, be humble and learn. Never ever ever give up!
I will now leave you with a final question.
So, you want to be a ..................?
