The Customer Is Not Always Right - 3 Types of Wrong Customer

The age old adage that does more damage than good.....
"The Customer Is Always Right"

That line you are taught from your first job onward. That line that defies real logic as the customer is not always right and can be wrong on many occassions. That line that can tie up productivity, resources and cause whole a lot of wasted time. With these 3 Customer Types I will give you some advice to move those wrong customers on faster, without you ending up out of pocket and out of time. These aren't failsafes nor are they all encompassing working solutions. They are indeed a start in the right direction and help you to see that the customer is not always right....

1.The Trouble Making Customer.

There is a type of customer that no matter how wrong they are they will never back down. These kind of customers are the ones who look for something to argue with you about. The, "somethings not quite right with the product", or, "I never bother to read the instructions", type of customer. The, "this is too cold", or, "this isn't hot enough customer". Of course you will go out of your way to find out what the general problem is and try to fix it as soon as possible. This customer though won't let you fix the problem without a fight. You will be polite, patient and kind but none of this has an effect as this person was out to wreck someones day from the get go.

So what do you do? You do what you can up to the point of grovelling on the floor in front of them. You offer a remedy or their money back if in the terms and conditions. Generally these customers won't stop there though. They will threaten, "I am going to tell all my friends and family not to shop here". The best thing to do is not to retaliate and just say, "Thank You, I have done all I can for you. Sorry you feel that way. I now have to get on with helping people who want my help." Then leave it there, don't respond, don't stand there and wait for an answer, just walk away (make sure the person is not coming at your with a shoe in their hand though!)

If in the case you are not sure about the problem then refer it to your supervisor. If you are the supervisor the buck stops with you. Make the decision and stick with it. If the same customer comes back into your store, office, ear on a mobile phone jsut be polite as you can be, help them and then vacate the area. Don't give them a chance to start up, as they will, oh yes, they will......

2. The Rude Customer.

This kind of customer is the one who thinks they can say what they want, when they want, to anyone they want. The best way to deal with this customer is not to take any nonsense. As soon as they start to be rude to you or the staff around you, shut them down. Their dollar is not worth the hassle of staff, yourself and other customers having to be subjected to rudeness. Give them a warning, "I'm sorry sir but you are being very rude, please either stop or leave now". If they don't stop then direct them out of the store, shop, office or wherever you need them directed out of. If you have security, get them to do their job and move the person out.

Simple? Not so simple as for this approach you have to be a strong character to back up what you say. You must follow through on what you say and show it on your face that you mean business. You will respect yourself, staff will respect you and other customers will also respect you for taking action. Never ever let anyone walk all over you. You are a valued person in every sense of the word and you must step into that value. Sometimes when the dollar gets involved people will will eat a crap sandwich just to get that dollar in the bank but where does that leave your self respect and others who work with you?

Bosses if you are reading this how do you deal with rude people in your life? How does this reflect in your workplace? Are you that rude person in the workplace yourself?

3. The Blatant Lying Customer

This is the customer that has just grabbed a handful of lollies out the the pick and mix bin and started munching on them in full view of everyone. When approached they flat out deny they have done anything of the sort while spitting out bits of lollie as they talk. The kind of customer who buys an item, takes it home, it gets destroyed by the persons kids, dog, pet alligator....you get the drift. They bring it back into the store and say "I opened the box and it was already broken". With a look of innocence on their face.

How do you deal with this? You call them on it. After asking a few questions you will get the view of the situation. Don't be sucked in and don't play the game. Pull them up on their actions while treating them with the same respect anyone deserves. Try not to make a scene about it but be prepared because this customer will try to poor petrol on the fire and fast. Get back up if you need it while keeping your own demeanor calm and collected. Get this customer away from the crowd and into a private space away from prying eyes. The rest depends on how serious the issue is and if the law needs to get involved. Lying is lying and theft is theft and it is never right!

The Customer Is Not Always Right

So as you can see and have probably experienced, the customer is not always right. Maybe you have been this type of customer yourself? We need to stop this saying and it needs to be changed to "If the customer is in the wrong it is not worth the pain and hassle of getting their dollar". It is not worth you loosing self respect over, your staff loosing happiness in the workplace over, your customers having to be around while they shop and buy your products.

Let's cut the PC rubbish out of our society one bit at a time.
We need to gain some self respect back and a backbone to go with it.
The dollar is not worth grovelling for, lowering our standards for and breaking our boundaries for.

So you want to be a Graphic Designer?

For my first blog post I wanted to start from the start as it were.

So here we go.....Once upon a time there was a young boy called Simon.........

When I was a young boy I had a instant attraction to all things visual media. I loved Fantasy & Sci-Fi Art, Architectural Designs, Technical Drawings, Airbrushed Custom Car Graphics, Insignia on Fighter & Bomber Aircraft, etc. I also loved building and painting model figurines and war gaming miniatures. For me it was about a feeling I got when I saw something that really grabbed me, got me excited, fired me up and inspired my imagination.

For me it was this kind of magic, that people had, to create this beautiful visually stimulating art and design. It enabled me to dream for hours on end about ideas and about fantasy worlds that didn't actually really exist apart from what was on paper. I have always felt that feeling of being truly excited when I saw an art work or design piece that just hit all the right buttons for me.

I didn't think I would be able to ever be as good as the comic book artists or concept drawing designers but I continued to find more material to view and to learn about. I never thought I would end up realizing that seed that had been placed inside me as a young boy.

Photoshop was some kind of magical graphic design tool

As I grew up I kept at trying to be creative or at least have my creative visual side stimulated by admiring others work.
I thought that Photoshop was some kind of magic tool and Illustrator a kind of magic device that I wouldn't be able to master. That was when I decided I wanted to learn about Graphic Design and take the step from dreaming to actually partaking of that world so I enrolled in a Introductory Certificate in Visual Arts

Boy was that a shock to my system. I had to unlearn what I thought Visual Art actually was and then learn about what it actually wasn't. I must say I didn't really find the Certificate that fun but it did really open my eyes to what was a real possibility for my future. I aced the Certificate with Straight A's. So my next natural decision was to enroll into the Bachelor of Visual Arts. This was also another shock and it was now getting real. I had to try and learn multiple computer programs all at once while trying to do assignments and projects, not just on time, but do them well.

With a Graphic Design Degree in the bag I had a brand new perspective on life

3 years later, and with a brand new perspective on life, I thought I would leave the Bachelors with a Degree and could just walk into a Graphic Design job. I was in for another shock and it really hurt....it was called reality. I realized I had done really well in my degree but that meant nothing in the real world. I had to gain experience but to gain experience I had to get a job but to get the job I had to have experience....you get my drift. It was a catch-22 and it was a very hard point in my life.

I didn't give up but I did get work in industries that had nothing to do with what I had studied for. Manual labour jobs,
hard outside work in all kinds of weather, on land and on sea. I worked as a process engineer making fencing systems for farms, a work hand on a oyster farm, a meat packer in a butchery, a supermarket shelf stacker among other things. All throughout that time though I never let my dream die. I thought about it, I dreamed about it, I continued to dwell on it. I would get that job as a Graphic Designer or die trying.

When I was working in those various jobs I still played around with design on the computer, surfed the net finding inspiration, tutorials, visual stimuli to keep my dream moving forward for when I did get the opportunity to finally get accepted into a design job. I did some freelance work here and there, did short stints of design work, but never a steady full time gig. Yes I got down and yes I was disappointed but I never gave up or let that flame die inside me.

Years later I finally got a graphic design job

I finally got a full time job as a graphic designer, after applying for many and after many nerve racking interviews, which turned into a multidisciplinary position. I was now doing graphic design, web design, digital marketing with adwords, bingads, facebook, twitter, youtube, instagram. I also learnt about and experienced the true value and power of search engine optimisation and it's very real results in and on business.  Since then I have been in a few of the same kind jobs and I have learnt so much. It has been amazing. I am now a experienced Graphic Designer, Web Designer, Digital Marketer, Presentologist, SEO Professional and also a Content Writer!

Never ever give up!

The main idea of this post is to tell you that no matter what, never ever let your dream die. Ask God and tell him about what you would like to do, after all God probably put that desire in you to begin with. Keep steering your life towards those goals and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. Strive and claw your way forward, seek, ask, be humble and learn. Never ever ever give up!

I will now leave you with a final question.

So, you want to be a ..................?
